Cahill's Three-Hit Shutout Gives Merrimack 5-0 Win over Bentley
WALTHAM, MA- Senior Atlee Cahill
(Gloucester, MA) pitched a three-hit shutout and her
teammates gave her more than enough support with a four-run third
as Merrimack College blanked Bentley University, 5-0, in
Northeast-10 Conference softball on the Bentley field Thursday
afternoon.
The game had been scheduled as part of a doubleheader earlier in
the week, but was rained out after Bentley had taken the opener,
4-3.
All four runs in the third were unearned after the inning opened
with back-to-back errors. Following a pop-up for the first out,
sophomore second baseman Monique
Gosselin (Lawrence, MA) followed with a single,
loading the bases. They were quickly cleared by junior catcher
Kara
Melillo (North Andover, MA), who tripled to left to
make it a 3-0 game. Later in the inning, Melillo scored the
Warriors' fourth run on a single by sophomore Alex Gallant
(Salem, NH).
Merrimack made it 5-0 in the fourth and again a triple was
involved. Senior left fielder Emily Cummings
(Andover, MA) had the three-base hit and scored on a
single to center by junior second baseman Jamie Millett
(Hudson, MA).
For Bentley, sophomore third baseman Jasmine Ortiz had
Bentley's first hit, a triple to center in the third. The only
other hits yielded by Cahill were infield singles, by sophomore
catcher Megan Blier in the fourth and by Ortiz in the
sixth.
Cahill didn't walk a batter and struck out six while recording
her sixth win and second shutout. Her teammates provided 10 hits,
including two apiece by Gallant, Gosselin and senior third baseman
Casey
Conetta (Darien, CT).
Bentley fell to 12-20 overall and 9-15 NE-10, while Merrimack
moved ahead of the Falcons in the standings, improving to 14-25
overall and 10-16 in the conference.
The Warriors wrap up the regular season this weekend at home
with a doubleheader on Saturday against Adelphi (noon) and
doubleheader with Pace on Sunday (noon) during which 'Senior Day'
will take place in between games.
