Men's Lacrosse Rallies for Thrilling 6-5 Win over Adelphi
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Greg Melaugh (Billerica,
MA) scored the game-winner, as the Merrimack men's
lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals to defeat Adelphi
University 6-5 in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon at Warrior
Field.
Melaugh took a feed from Greg Fallon (North Kingstown,
RI) with 6:35 left to give the Warriors their first lead
with his 11th of the season.
Merrimack's defense held from there, as Cory
Spinale (Wakefield, MA) made four saves down the stretch,
while the defense led by Phil Ketrelakes (Peabody,
MA) and Shane Mahar (Slingerlands, NY)
forced numerous turnovers, including the decisive turnover with
1:02 left in regulation to preserve the victory.
The Warriors trailed 5-3 with 3:14 remaining in the third,
before Mark Webber (Mansfield, MA), Fallon, and
Nick Maggio (Winchester, MA) scored 3:20 apart to
tie the game, with Maggio's tally, his second of the game,
coming right off his win of the faceoff to start the fourth
quarter.
“It was a real hard fought game and we did a good job of
fighting back for the victory,” said head coach Mike Morgan.
“I thought our conditioning really helped in the second half,
and the guys really dug deep to pull this one out.”
The teams traded opportunities as the fourth progressed with
Spinale and David Schneiderbauer matching each other save-for-save.
Spinale finished with 12 saves, six of them in the first, while
Schneiderbauer totaled 18 saves, 11 in the second half.
Mahar finished with a game-high four caused turnovers, while
Fallon and Maggio had two points each.
Kevin Kemp had two goals and an assist for the Panthers, who
fell to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in the conference.
The Warriors trailed 3-0 midway through the second quarter
before Maggio and David Robinson (Lexington, MA)
netted a goal each to cut the deficit to one at halftime. Spinale
and Schneiderbauer combined for 14 saves in a defensive-minded,
penalty-free first half.
Merrimack (6-1, 3-0 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm Wednesday at 7
p.m. in a big conference matchup at Warrior Field.
