Baseball Stumbles, Swept by Adelphi; 7-1, 10-4
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack College baseball team
(8-5, 5-3 NE-10) was swept by Adelphi University (17-6, 5-2 NE-10)
Saturday afternoon on Warrior Diamond by scores of 7-1 and 10-4.
The Warriors bats were silenced in game one by Panther ace,
Keith Couch, who struck out nine in a complete game.
On the mound for the Warriors, senior captain Ryan O'Rourke
(Worcester, MA) went 7.2 innings and struck out five
batters, but allowed three runs in the eighth inning before being
pulled.
Of the four Warrior hits in game one, sophomore Tim Curran (South
Weymouth, MA) had three, including a double to knot the
score at one, bringing home senior captain Brendan Pyburn
(Peabody, MA) from second.
In the nightcap, senior captain Ryan McNeill (Lynnfield,
MA) dropped his first decision of the year after allowing
five earned runs in 3.2 innings. Four hurlers saw at least
one inning of relief on Saturday afternoon in game two.
Jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Warriors
surrendered seven runs in the fourth inning to concede an
eventually insurmountable lead. In the game, seven Warriors
reached on base hits, but 15 Panther knocks combined with five
Merrimack errors gave way to a 10-4 final.
In an eighth-inning push, the Warriors Paul Arce (West Hartford,
CT) drove in a pair of runs after two errors were
committed by Adelphi.
The Warriors return to action on Monday, April 5th
when they travel to UMass-Lowell for a non-Conference/Conference
doubleheader in Lowell beginning at 3:00pm.
