Baseball Slowed on the Road by Franklin Pierce, 7-3
RINDGE, NH– Despite grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the
sixth inning, the Merrimack College baseball team (9-7, 5-5 NE-10)
gave up seven unanswered runs to Franklin Pierce University (19-10,
7-4 NE-10) on the road for a 7-3 loss on Tuesday afternoon at
Pappas Field.
“Our league is incredibly tough and whoever plays good
defense consistently is going to be there in the end,” said
head coach Joe Sarno. “We
haven't done that of late, but I'm confident
we'll put it together and be there in the end.”
Going up 2-0 on a Tim Curran (South
Weymouth, MA) double to right center in the top of the
sixth, the Warriors gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the
inning to even the score. In the seventh, the reigning
Conference champion Raven offense exploded for five runs on four
hits, but was aided heavily by three errors committed by the
Warriors.
Senior captain Brendan Pyburn
(Peabody, MA) hit one of two base knocks to score
PJ
Farnham (North Andover, MA) in the eighth, but the
four run deficit was too much to overcome as the Warriors went down
in order in the top of the ninth.
Freshman Mark O'Flynn
(Ipswich, MA) made his sixth start of the season on
Tuesday and went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, including a double in
the third inning. O'Flynn is now batting .368 on the
season in eight appearances and 1.000 as a pinch hitter.
Senior Dylan Ellis (Gloucester,
MA) went 6.0 innings on the mound, allowing two
earned runs on four hits while striking out four.
Franklin Pierce, a team that received 19 votes in the NCAA
Division II national poll this week, will travel to North Andover
on Thursday for a Conference match-up at 3:30pm on Warrior Diamond
with Merrimack.
