#10 Women's Lacrosse Defeats AIC 21-9 for Second Straight Victory
SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Merrimack women's lacrosse
team, ranked tenth in this week's IWLCA Division II National
Poll, made it two straight victories with a 21-9 win over American
International Tuesday afternoon.
Nine different Warriors recorded multiple-point games, led by an
eight-point effort from senior Mia Basile (Longmeadow,
MA). Mia Basile had three goals, while Colleen
Strachan (Bedford, MA) and Christina McCarron
(Westwood, MA) scored a game-high four goals each.
Alicia Tinsley (Shrewsbury, MA) netted three in
the win, while Maddie Basile (Longmeadow, MA)
totaled two goals and five points.
“We started strong out of the gate and made some effective
mid-game adjustments after halftime,” said head coach Corinne
Baker. “I'm proud of how we played, and we're
looking forward to Bentley on Thursday.”
The Warriors started quickly, taking a 6-0 lead in the first
6:33 en route to a 13-5 halftime lead.
Jamie-Lee Whiteway (Billerica, MA) made eight
saves in the victory and stopped all four free-position
opportunities. The Merrimack defense forced 35 Yellow Jacket
turnovers, as Strachan led the way with four caused turnovers.
Mary Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA) had a game-best
seven ground balls and five draw controls.
Katie Warner scored four times and added two assists in the loss
for AIC.
Earlier Tuesday, Merrimack debuted in the IWLCA Division II
National Poll at the #10 spot for the first time in school history.
Through six games, Mia Basile continues to lead the Warriors with
18 goals and 38 points and has no fewer than five points in any
single game.
Merrimack (4-2, 3-2 NE-10) opens a two-game homestand with a
showdown with rival Bentley on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field.
