Softball Earns Hard-Fought Split with Adelphi Saturday
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – After dropping game one of a
doubleheader in extra innings, 5-3, the Merrimack College softball
team (15-26) bounced back for a 7-2 victory in game two over
Adelphi University Saturday afternoon on Volpe Field.
The Warriors conclude their season tomorrow at home against Pace
University in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Volpe Field.
In game one on Saturday, senior Atlee Cahill
(Gloucester, MA) not only pitched all eight innings, but
hit three singles in the opener. Seven other Warriors reached
on a base hit in game one for 11 hits as a team, but a pair of
homers for the Panthers and four hits in the eighth proved to be
the difference.
Cahill fell to 6-9 on the year entering her last doubleheader as
a Warrior tomorrow afternoon. The senior righty has pitched a
total of 234.1 innings, striking out 88 in her four years.
She has also knocked 47 base hits in 115 appearances for Merrimack.
All day, the Warriors did not commit one error in the field, but
did leave seven aboard in each game.
In the night cap, sophomore Monique
Gosselin (Lawrence, MA) hit a three-run
homer—her eighth of the year—to get the Warriors on the
board first. Gosselin would later rob the Panthers of a home
run, but Deandra Leo connected on her second home run of the day to
cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth.
Merrimack sprung for another three runs in the fourth after
junior Kristen Lemay
(Shrewsbury, MA) hit a two-run single and Kara Melillo (North
Andover, MA) drew a walk to bring in another run.
Junior Jamie Millett
(Hudson, MA) also tacked on the seventh and final run
in the sixth with her fifth double of the season.
Sophomore Alex Gallant
(Salem, NH) got the start for Merrimack on the mound and
improved to 5-7 on the year while allowing just two earned runs and
striking out six in the 7-2 decision.
Seniors Jill Bradford
(Stoneham, MA), Emily Cummings
(Andover, MA), Casey Conetta
(Darien, CT) and Cahill will be honored tomorrow in
between the doubleheader with Pace at noon. To date, the four
have combined for an even 200 hits in their careers at Merrimack
College.
