EASTON, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team earned a 2-1 win over No. 4 Stonehill, Saturday afternoon. The victory is the first win for the Warriors over the Skyhawks in the past nine seasons. The win moves Merrimack to 1-3 overall while Stonehill falls to 1-3 on the year.

The Skyhawks broke the scoreless tie, 27 minutes into the game. Lauren Gifford tallied her first goal of the year to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead. Gifford buried a shot from five yards out on the right side.

Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.) knotted the score at 1-1 with less than three minutes remaining in the opening half. Otis scored on a drive from the left side of the arc off of a pass from Elizabeth Lincoln (Unity, Maine). The sophomore's goal came on the Warriors lone shot of the period off of their only penalty corner of the game.

In the second half, Merrimack's Otis connection cashed in, 15 minutes into the stanza. Jen Otis tipped in a pass from Jessica Otis (East Rochester, N.Y.) from the top of the arc. The Warriors held onto the lead and stymied the Skyhawks in the remainder of the game.

Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) turned aside 15 shots in the contest, earning her first win of the 2010 campaign between the pipes.

Stonehill owned the advantage in shots on the day with 26 while Merrimack fired four. The Skyhawks also held the edge in penalty corners, 20-1.

"Today's win was a team win. Kerri, Victoria (DeLacey), Stephanie (Glazier) and Ashley (Nadeau) really put forth fantastic efforts. The entire team played with passion and pride," said head coach Anne Rounce.
