Field Hockey Stuns No. 4 Stonehill, 2-1
EASTON, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team
earned a 2-1 win over No. 4 Stonehill, Saturday afternoon. The
victory is the first win for the Warriors over the Skyhawks in the
past nine seasons. The win moves Merrimack to 1-3 overall while
Stonehill falls to 1-3 on the year.
The Skyhawks broke the scoreless tie, 27 minutes into the game.
Lauren Gifford tallied her first goal of the year to give Stonehill
a 1-0 lead. Gifford buried a shot from five yards out on the right
side.

Otis (Penacook, N.H.) knotted the score at 1-1 with
less than three minutes remaining in the opening half. Otis scored
on a drive from the left side of the arc off of a pass from
Elizabeth Lincoln
(Unity, Maine). The sophomore's goal came on the Warriors
lone shot of the period off of their only penalty corner of the
game.
In the second half, Merrimack's Otis connection cashed in, 15
minutes into the stanza. Jen Otis tipped in a pass from Jessica Otis
(East Rochester, N.Y.) from the top of the arc. The
Warriors held onto the lead and stymied the Skyhawks in the
remainder of the game.
Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) turned aside 15 shots in the contest,
earning her first win of the 2010 campaign between the
pipes.
Stonehill owned the advantage in shots on the day with 26 while
Merrimack fired four. The Skyhawks also held the edge in penalty
corners, 20-1.
"Today's win was a team win. Kerri, Victoria (DeLacey),
Stephanie (Glazier) and Ashley (Nadeau) really put forth
fantastic efforts. The entire team played with passion and pride,"
said head coach Anne Rounce.
