Dion Tallies Two as Women's Soccer Downs New Haven, 2-1
NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Merrimack women's soccer
team held off New Haven for a 2-1 win, Sunday afternoon. The
Warriors improve their record to 2-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the
Northeast-10 conference. The Chargers fall to 1-3-0 overall and 0-2
in the conference with the loss.
Danielle Dion
(North Grosvenordale, Conn.) netted both of Merrimack's
goals in the game. Dion opened the scoring in the 26th minute,
burying a shot from within the penalty area to give the Warriors
the 1-0 lead. She wasn't done there as the rookie notched her
second goal of the game just two minutes later. Emily Para (Rochester,
N.Y.) made a pass from midfield for Dion to run onto. Dion
controlled the ball and finished it to put Merrimack ahead 2-0.
The Warriors held onto the two-goal advantage at halftime but
the lead was quickly sliced in half. Just 42 seconds into the
second period, New Haven got on the board with a quick strike from
Emily Buckley-Matura. The one goal was all that the Merrimack
defense would allow, suppressing the Chargers' offense for the
remainder of the game.
Between the pipes, Kiley Horne
(Scituate, Mass.) made eight saves to earn her second win
of the season. Kim Taylor turned aside two shots on the day for New
Haven.
The Chargers owned the advantage in shots, firing 18 in the game
and limiting the Warriors to seven. New Haven also held a 9-1 edge
in corner kicks on the day.
"Our defense kept us in the game as New Haven threw everything
they could at us. New Haven is a great team but we played
exceptionally well today," head coach Gabe Mejail said.
Merrimack will look to remain unbeaten in the Northeast-10 as it
hosts St. Anselm, Sept. 15.
