Field Hockey Downed by Lowell
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field
hockey team suffered a 5-0 defeat to No. 3 UMass Lowell Tuesday
evening at Warrior Field. The Warriors fall to 1-4 on the year and
the River Hawks improve to 5-0.
UMass Lowell took an early 1-0 lead when Liz Day notched the
game's first goal on an assist from Annie Hansbury. With five
minutes remaining in the first period, the River Hawks tallied
their second goal of the game. Day stopped the ball off of a
penalty corner and played it across the top of the arc to Hansbury.
Hansbury sent a shot towards the cage where Katie Enaire deflected
the ball in for the River Hawks' second goal.
In the second half, Enaire scored ten minutes into play with an
unassisted goal to put the visitors up 3-0. Enaire tallied her
third goal of the game when Sammy Macy's initial shot was
saved and Enaire put the rebound in the cage. Enaire once again
found the back of the net to close out the scoring with an
unassisted goal 22 minutes into the final half, finishing with four
goals on the day.
The River Hawks held the edge in shots, firing 33 on the game
while the Warriors took eight. UMass Lowell also owned a 17-7
advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore goaltender Kerri Bergquist made 15 saves on the day
for Merrimack. Melanie Hopkins turned aside three shots for the
River Hawks.
"Katie Zubkus (Dover, N.H.),
Sarah Dunbar (Hubbardston, Mass.) and
Jamie Spano (Reading, Mass.) all put forth great
efforts today. We're just missing that one key piece to the
puzzle," said head coach Anne Rounce.
Merrimack will look to rebound from this tough loss as it hosts
American International Sept. 18 at Warrior Field.
