Dion Sends Women's Soccer Past Saint Anselm in Double OT, 2-1
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack women's
soccer team defeated Saint Anselm 2-1 in a dramatic fashion.
Freshman Danielle Dion
(North Grosvenordale, Conn.) blasted a shot past the
Hawks' goalkeeper, 105 minutes after the opening whistle. The
Warriors up their record to 3-1-1 overall and remain unbeaten at
3-0-0 in the Northeast-10. Saint Anselm falls to 1-3 on the year
and 1-2 in the conference.
The Hawks broke through 11 minutes into the contest. Siobhan
Flaherty headed in a Emily Rooney shot that bounced off the
crossbar for the 1-0 lead. Jessica Peacock
(Hopedale, Mass.) had Merrimack's best shot on goal in the
first half, sending a shot destined for the upper right corner of
the net. Hawks' goalkeeper Jackie Cooney made a leaping save to
keep the home team off the scoreboard.
Peacock would not be denied of her first goal of the 2010
campaign as the junior defender stepped up and converted a penalty
kick with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
The two teams played a scoreless first overtime period, setting
the stage for Dion. Khara Roman (Orange,
Conn.) controlled the ball deep in the Warriors' offensive
end then laid a ball to the top of the penalty area to the oncoming
rookie. Dion one-timed a shot past the Saint Anselm netminder and
into the right side of the net, sending the Warrior Field faithful
into a frenzy.
Merrimack held a whopping 33-8 advantage in shots, including a
9-0 edge in the extra periods. The Warriors also owned a 10-1 edge
in corner kicks in the game.
Between the pipes, Kiley Horne
(Scituate, Mass.) made three saves to earn her third win
of the season. Cooney turned aside 11 shots on the day for the
Hawks.
Merrimack puts its pristine Northeast-10 record on the line as
it hosts American International, Sept. 18.
