#19 Men's Soccer Triumphs in Northeast-10 Premiere
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The No. 19 Merrimack
men's soccer team opened up the Northeast-10 portion of the 2010
schedule with a 4-0 victory over Saint Rose. The Warriors extended
their winning streak to five games as they improve to 5-0-0 on the
year and 1-0-0 in the conference. The Golden Knights fall to 1-3-1
overall and 0-3-0 against Northeast-10 opponents.
Robbie Sabadoz
(Ottawa, Ontario) paced Merrimack with four points on a
goal and two assists.
Franklin Pena
(Revere, Mass.) opened the scoring just minutes into the
match with his team–leading fifth goal of the season. Pena
picked up a loose ball in the box and blasted a shot over the
Golden Knights' keeper and into the back of the net. Sabadoz picked
up an assist on the goal.
Sabadoz once again set up a Merrimack score. Sabadoz sent a pass
across the penalty area to Matt McFadden (New
Hampton, N.H.) who was making a run to the front of the
net unmarked. McFadden easily laid the ball into lower right corner
of the net for the 2-0 lead in favor of the home side.
The Warriors nearly tallied a third goal in the first
half. Evan Burokas
(Auburn, Mass) ripped a shot from 18-yards out but Saint
Rose netminder, Patrick Ohlsson, made the save but gave up a
rebound. Nelson Santos Da
Graca (Gothenburg, Sweden) was right there to take
advantage of the open net and loose ball. Ohlsson held his ground
and denied Da Graca point blank.
Merrimack netted the third goal with four minutes remaining in
the opening period. Burokas sent a through-ball in behind the
Golden Knights' defense for Sabadoz to run onto. Sabadoz outran a
defender and tucked the ball into the goal to give the Warriors a
3-0 lead after the first 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore Olof Lindhe
(Stockholm, Sweden) netted the only goal of the second
stanza. Burokas served a ball into the box to Pena who headed the
ball to Lindhe. Lindhe turned and fired a shot into the top of the
net.
The Warriors held a 24-7 edge in shots, as well as an 8-1
advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Kevin Joyce
(Mansfield, Mass.) turned aside two shots in the contest
to earn his fifth win of the season and second shutout. Freshman
netminder Mattias Drummond
(Partille, Sweden) made his first collegiate appearance
for the Warriors, playing 19 minutes in a relief effort preserving
the shutout. Ohlsson made eight saves in the game for Saint
Rose.
