Women's Soccer Knocks Off #17 American International, 2-1
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack women's
soccer team handed No. 17 American International its first defeat
of the year. The Warriors picked up their fourth-consecutive win on
the season, topping the Yellow Jackets 2-1. With the victory,
Merrimack improves to 4-1-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the Northeast-10
Conference. American International falls to 5-1-0 on the year and
3-1-0 in the league.
Merrimack's sister combination connected for the first tally of
the match. Jamie Alnwick
(Groton, Mass.) served up a corner kick to her older
sister Ashley Alnwick
(Groton, Mass.), crashing to the back post. Ashley Alnwick
knocked the ball into the goal, giving the home team a 1-0
advantage seven minutes in to the contest.
Caroline Heron brought the Yellow Jackets back into the game as
she fired a shot into the far post from 20 yards from goal, for her
sixth goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets nearly took the lead as a shot was sent
towards the goal but Melissa
Garabedian (Salem, Mass.) was positioned on the right
post. Garabedian cleared the ball off the goal line to prevent the
visitors from scoring a second goal.
Jessica Peacock
(Hopedale, Mass.) notched the go-ahead goal for the
Warriors with six minutes remaining. Peacock headed in a corner
kick from Lindsey deMont
(Littleton, Mass.) to put the home side up 2-1.
Merrimack offensively possessed the ball and played lock down
defense for the remainder of the game. Peacock's goal would
hold up as the game-winner as the entire team rushed the field at
the sound of the final whistle.
Kiley
Horne (Scituate, Mass.) turned aside three shots as
she earned her fourth win of the season. Sam Webber made five saves
for the Yellow Jackets.
American International fired 15 shots in the game while the
Warriors managed eight. Merrimack was awarded seven of the game's
eight corner kicks.
