Field Hockey Overpowers Saint Anselm, 2-1
MANCHESTER, N.H.- The Merrimack field hockey
team posted a 2-1 non-conference win at Saint Anselm, Wednesday
afternoon. The Warriors up their record to 3-4 on the year while
the Hawks fall to 0-4.
Sarah
Salatto (Guilford, Conn.) gave Merrimack a 1-0 lead 17
minutes into the contest on a pass from Jamie Spano (Reading,
Mass.). Spano doubled the Warriors' lead just ten minutes
later, tallying an unassisted goal.
Merrimack's 2-0 halftime lead was short lived as the Hawks would
get a goal back after 36 seconds of play in the second stanza. Sara
Sterling pulled the home side to within a goal by converting a
penalty stroke.
The Warriors held onto the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the
game to earn their third win of the season. Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) turned in a seven-save performance for
Merrimack.
The two teams combined for a total of 56 shots in the match. The
Warriors overwhelmingly owned the edge in the category, 43-13.
"Today's victory was a team win. We played really well and
created numerous opportunities. We just need to get hungrier near
the goal," said head coach Anne Rounce.
Merrimack looks to post its fourth win of the 2010 campaign as
the Warriors host Southern Connecticut, September 25 in a
non-conference match.
