Field Hockey Falls to Southern Connecticut State in OT, 2-1

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team lost a close 2-1 game to Southern Connecticut State, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. The Warriors fall to 3-5 on the year while the Owls improve to 2-5.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 score at halftime. A minute into the second period, Southern Connecticut notched the first goal of the game. Amanda DeChent scored from the center of the arc off of a pass from Laura Dembofsky for the visitors.

Merrimack had a great opportunity in the second half to make the score at 1-1 but April Daugherty's (Lincoln, R.I.) shot caromed off the left post and ricocheted wide.

The Warriors orchestrated a two-on-one in its offensive end. Daugherty and Jamie Spano (Reading, Mass.) attacked the Owls' goal with eight minutes remaining in the game. Daugherty passed the ball between the defender's legs to Spano. Spano took a touch around the goalkeeper and easily potted the ball to knot the score at one goal apiece.

Merrimack pressed for the game-winner in the waning minutes of regulation but Lauren Zarrella kept the contest tied.

The Warriors hit the piping twice in the overtime period. Daugherty and Otis each had shots glance off the left post.

Southern Connecticut earned a penalty stroke midway through the extra stanza. DeChent converted the penalty stroke to give the visiting side a 2-1 win.

Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made seven saves for Merrimack between the posts. Zarrella turned aside 12 shots for the Owls.

The Warriors held a 29-14 advantage in shots and a 13-9 edge in shots on goal. Merrimack also earned 16 penalty corners in the contest while Southern Connecticut was awarded three.
