Field Hockey Blanks Assumption 2-0, Earns First Northeast-10 Win
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field
hockey team picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference victory of
the 2010 campaign, downing Assumption 2-0 Tuesday evening at
Warrior Field. With the win, the Warriors are now 4-5 on the season
and 1-1 in the conference. The Greyhounds remain winless at 0-7
overall and 0-2 in the league.
Freshman Jessica Otis
(Pittsford, N.Y.) potted the game's first goal less than
seven minutes into the contest. Otis dribbled down the left side
all the way to the endline. The rookie then cut the ball towards
the arc before swerving around defenders. Once in the center of the
arc, Otis ripped a shot past the Greyhounds' goalkeeper.
Just seven minutes later, Sarah Dunbar
(Hubbardston, Mass.) pounced on a loose ball in the middle
of the arc and took a shot. Dunbar's shot was saved but Katie Zubkus
(Dover, N.H.) dove to knock the ball into the goal for the
2-0 lead.
Merrimack held onto the 2-0 lead throughout the second half.
Zubkus nearly tacked on a third goal for the home side with 20
minutes remaining in the game. The sophomore blasted a shot from
the top of the arc off of a penalty corner. Zubkus' shot went past
everyone inside the arc, including the goalkeeper, and ricocheted
off of the left post and out.
Sophomore netminder Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) posted her first shutout of the 2010
season. Bergquist made three saves between the pipes for Merrimack.
Danielle Luongo turned aside six shots for Assumption.
The Warriors held the advantage in shots for the game, 19-11.
Merrimack narrowly owned the edge in penalty corners, 12-10.
"I'm glad that we got our first conference win tonight. The team
played really well throughout the whole game," said head coach Anne
Rounce. "It is really exciting to see our players returning from
injury and other players stepping up their games."
