Field Hockey Falls to No. 5 East Stroudsburg in Season-Opener
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field
hockey team dropped game one of the 2010 campaign to No. 5 East
Stroudsburg, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field, 5-0. Merrimack
(0-1) came out of the gate strong, pinning the ball in their
offensive end.
East Stroudsburg (1-0) got on the board 11 minutes
into the first half as Jessica Frantz converted a penalty shot.
Frantz doubled the visitor's lead later in the opening
stanza. She one-timed a shot into the cage for her second goal of
the contest.
The visiting Warriors tallied their third score of the day in
the waning minutes of the first period. Kayla Cilenti found
Brittany Kocis in front of the net for the goal. East Stroudsburg
held onto a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Warriors of ESU added two more goals in the second half.
Kayla Cilenti ripped a shot from the top of the half circle into
the lower right corner. Frantz registered her third goal of the
game to cap off the scoring.
Merrimack netminder Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee,
Mass.) turned aside 14 shots on the day. Maureen
Ordnung and Sarah Dobrosky combined to make 12 saves in the
game.
April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) fired seven
shots in the contest, five being on frame, to lead Merrimack.
Merrimack returns home, tomorrow, Sept. 5, as it hosts C.W. Post
in a non-conference match at noon.
