Early Goal Propels Men's Soccer Past Dominican, 1-0
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- Junior Evan Burokas'
(Auburn, Mass.) first half goal proved to be the
difference as the Merrimack men's soccer team added another victory
in the win column Saturday evening at Warrior Field. The Warriors
defeated Dominican 1-0 to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. The
Chargers suffered their first loss of the 2010 campaign, falling to
1-1-0.
Burokas tallied the Warriors' lone goal of the game just seven
minutes in. The junior's corner kick deflected off of a defender
and went into the net, giving the home team the early 1-0 lead. In
the closing minutes of the first stanza, Matt McFadden (New
Hampton, N.H.) nearly made it 2-0. McFadden acrobatically
shot the ball from the top of the box and had it ring off the
crossbar.
Merrimack owned the advantage on shots, firing four on frame to
Dominican's one. The Chargers held the edge in corner kicks, 6-3,
with all six being awarded in the second half.
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Kevin Joyce
(Mansfield, Mass.) earned his second victory of the
season, making one save in the winning effort. Brandon Heembrock
turned aside three shots for the Chargers in the game.
Merrimack takes to the pitch Sept. 9, as the Warriors travel to
take on Wilmington (Del.) in a non-conference matchup.
