Comeback Bid Falls Short, Field Hockey Downed by C.W. Post
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack field
hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to C.W. Post, Sunday afternoon
at Warrior Field. The Warriors fall to 0-2 on the year while the
Pioneers up their record to 1-0.
The Pioneers struck first, tallying a goal just 32 seconds into
the game. Amanda Miller fired a shot through traffic and into the
cage. C.W. Post added another goal midway through the first half.
Mia Paltrineri batted the ball out of the air for the score to make
it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Sophomore Jen Otis (Penacook,
N.H.) pulled the Warriors to within a goal. Otis knocked
home a rebound with six minutes remaining in the half.
April Daugherty
(Lincoln, R.I.) knotted the game, seven minutes into the
second stanza. Daugherty received the ball in front of the cage and
turned to fire it past the Pioneers' goalkeeper. After C.W. Post
tacked on another goal, Daugherty once again netted the equalizer
with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Pioneers regained the lead two minutes later and added an
insurance goal in the closing minutes to secure the 5-3
victory.
Merrimack goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) turned aside 16 shots in the contest.
Cortney Colern made nine saves in goal for C.W. Post.
C.W. Post held the edge in shots, 25-18, and penalty corners,
9-7, in the game.
"I felt that it was great that we could score some goals today.
Defensively, our sticks were strong," said head coach Anne Rounce.
"The season is still young. I'm confident that we will get where we
need to be."
