#6 Field Hockey Triumphs at Stonehill, 3-0
EASTON, MA – The #6 Merrimack field hockey team rolled to its 10th-straight victory of the season, downing Stonehill 3-0 Saturday afternoon on the road. The Warriors raised their record to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Skyhawks dipped to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
April Daugherty (Wakefield, RI) tallied Merrimack's first goal of the game at the 19:47 mark. Daugherty found the back of the net with a one-time drive from the right side after Elizabeth Lincoln (Unity, ME) crossed the ball from the left. The marker was Daugherty's team-leading 11th of the season.
The Warriors went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and a 6-4 edge in shots.
Jessica Otis (Pittsford, NY) made it a two-goal margin with her fifth score of the year less than five minutes into the second frame. Otis knocked in a rebound from the right side of the cage to extend Merrimack's lead to 2-0.
Jen Otis (Penacook, NH) tacked on the Warriors' third goal of the contest with less than 20 minutes remaining. Otis blasted a shot from the top of the penalty area that ricocheted off of the left post and in. Katie Zubkus (Dover, NH) slid a pass across the top of the penalty area to Otis off of a penalty corner.
Merrimack finished with a slight 16-15 edge in shots taken on the day. Stonehill owned a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners earned in the game.
Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) posted her seventh shutout of the season to earn her 10th win in goal. The clean sheet was also Bergquist's 14th career shutout, tying her with Amy Larabee for the most in a Warrior uniform. The junior registered eight saves in the victory.
"We played great in the second half and the team really came together," said head coach Anne Rounce. "Our passing was crisp and our defense played extremely well all game."
Merrimack returns to action as it closes out a four-game road swing with a Northeast-10 Conference clash at Bentley October 4.
