WORCESTER, MA – The Merrimack women's lacrosse team notched its first conference win, defeating Assumption College 21-9 Tuesday afternoon.

Colleen Strachan (Bedford, MA) and Maria DeStefano (Eliot, ME) combined for 11 goals in the win, with Strachan posting eight points (six goals, two assists).

Merrimack led just 8-5 at halftime but rattled off 13 of the final 15 goals to put the game away in the second half.

Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD) had her best game of the year in net with 17 saves, including nine in the second half.

Strachan added seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Jen Pino (North Andover, MA) added two goals, two assists and a team-high five draw controls. Seven other Warriors also scored, including freshman Olivia Huie (Norwell, MA) who had two goals and an assist and picked up three draw controls in the victory.

Perhaps the biggest difference in the game was on free-position shots, where Merrimack converted on six of its seven chances, while Hedden stopped five of six Greyhound opportunities.

"This game showed us there's a lot to work on still," said head coach Corinne Baker. " The first half was shaky, but we made adjustments and had a much better second half. We forced turnovers, moved the ball well and had lots of scorers get in on the action. We'll look to make some improvements heading into Friday's game and our games down south."

The visitors also forced 18 turnovers, as senior captain Liz Lyons (Westwood, MA) caused four of them and added three ground balls.

Merrimack (2-1, 1-1 NE-10) kicks off a string of three non-conference contests against Dowling Friday at 4 p.m. at Warrior Field.
