Women's Lacrosse Falls to #1 Adelphi 25-5
GARDEN CITY, NY – The Merrimack women's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night, falling to the #1 and the defending National Champion Adelphi University 25-5 in Northeast-10 action.
The Panthers scored 10 of the first 11 goals, taking a 15-2 halftime before cruising to victory in the second half.
Five different Warriors, Mary Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA), Alicia Tinsley (Shrewsbury, MA), Colleen Strachan (Bedford, MA), Maria DeStefano (Eliot, ME) and Tyler Szymanski (Framingham, MA), netted goals in the loss, while Pasquantonio and Olivia Huie (Norwell, MA) added assists.
Huie led all Warriors with five draw controls and added six ground balls.
Elizabeth Fey tallied eight goals, 12 ground balls, and 10 draw controls, while Claire Petersen had 10 assists and 14 points in the win for the hosts.
Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD) stopped 13 shots in net in the loss.
"We have to take the positives from this game and learn from what it taught us as a team," said head coach Corinne Baker. "They're the defending National Champions and they're really strong offensively. They're a great team. We have to learn from this and work hard in preparation for Saturday."
Merrimack (6-3, 3-2 NE-10) returns home to battle #4 Le Moyne Saturday at noon. The game will be broadcast live online at merrimackathletics.com.
