Men's Tennis Starts Spring with 6-3 Victory over Adelphi
RYE, N.H.- The Merrimack men's tennis team began the spring season with a 6-3 victory over Adelphi Sunday afternoon at the Wentworth by the Sea Country Club in Rye, N.H. The Warriors improved to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 with the win. The Panthers sink to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in league action with the loss.
In doubles play, Tim McHugh (Edgartown, Mass.) and Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) partnered at the second slot to sweep all eight games to give Merrimack a quick 1-0 lead. Sean Pahler (Rumson, N.J.) and Liam Hoare (West Newbury, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles position for the Warriors' second point of the match. At the top spot, Max Eppley (Malaga, Spain) and Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia) were edged by Adelphi's Sebastian Nieves and Anton Voynov, 8-6.
With a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles portion of the match, Merrimack needed just three wins to capture the match.
Barnhart breezed past the Panthers' Gaeton Georges at the No. 3 slot, winning 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 1 position, Eppley grabbed 6-2 win in the first set and labored out a 7-5 victory in the second to take the match. Golijanin posted identical 6-3 scores in both sets against Voynov at the second singles spot.
Hoare dropped a 9-7 decision to Joe Carbone of Adelphi at the No. 4 position. McHugh claimed an 8-4 victory at the fifth singles slot while Chris Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I.) fell 8-5 at the sixth spot.
Merrimack returns to the courts March 13 to face St. Anselm at the Wentworth by the Sea Country Club.
