Men's Tennis Claims Program-Best 15th Win, Blanks Franklin Pierce
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack men's tennis team set a new program record with milestone win number 15. The Warriors defeated Franklin Pierce Sunday afternoon to improve to 15-3 on the year and 9-0 in the Northeast-10. The Ravens fall to 1-8 overall and in the conference with the loss.
Merrimack sprinted out to a stellar start with three doubles victories to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Max Eppley (Malaga, Spain) earned an 8-1 win at the top doubles slot. The duo of Tim McHugh (Edgartown, Mass.) and Chris Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I.) also picked up an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 position. Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Liam Hoare (West Newbury, Mass.) closed out doubles action with a win at the third spot.
The Warriors captured victories in all six singles matches to seal the historical win. Barnhart cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 singles position. Eppley prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at the second singles slot. Golijanin claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the third position.
McHugh triumphed 8-2 in an eight-game pro-set at the No. 4 position. Hoare recorded an 8-1 win in the fifth singles match while Toegemann rolled 8-0 at the sixth slot.
Merrimack looks to keep its unblemished Northeast-10 mark intact as it hosts Stonehill April 14.
