Men's Tennis Downs Pace 5-0, Advances to NE10 Semifinals
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack men's tennis team claimed a 5-0 victory over Pace Tuesday afternoon at Willows Racquet and Fitness Center in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals. The No. 2 seeded Warriors improve to 17-4 on the year while the Setters, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, falls to 5-9 on the year.
Merrimack claimed a 3-0 lead at the end of doubles play with three victories. Liam Hoare and Chris Toegemann cruised to an 8-0 win at the No. 3 doubles slot. Max Eppley and Petar Golijanin picked up an 8-3 victory at the top pairs position. Tim McHugh and Chris Barnhart rallied and battled to capture a 9-8 victory at the No. 2 spot, prevailing 7-4 in a tiebreaker.
McHugh breezed past Pace's Vinnie Birkenmeyer 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Golijanin sealed the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the third singles match.
With a 5-0 lead in favor of the Warriors, the match was halted due to Northeast-10 Conference playoff rules. Merrimack will host Bentley in the Norhteast-10 Conference semifinals April 21.
