#13 Women's Lacrosse Downs Saint Michael's on Senior Night
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The 13th-ranked Merrimack women's lacrosse team led 11-0 at halftime en route to a 19-3 victory over Saint Michael's College on Senior Night Wednesday at Warrior Field.
Merrimack scored nine times in the first 11:35 and seven times in a 4:34 span, with Christina McCarron (Westwood, MA) netting four goals, while Mary Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA) added three goals and five points to go with three draw controls.
The hosts forced 14 first-half turnovers, while outshooting the Purple Knights 27-5.
Lyons picked up four ground balls in the win, becoming the program's single-season leader for ground balls with 70 on the campaign. She added four more caused turnovers to her conference's leading total.
"It was a great overall team win," said head coach Corinne Baker. "I was really impressed with our clearing defense and our transition. It's something we focused on as a team in practice."
Eight Warriors scored in the win, including Katherine Millin (Norwood, MA) and Tyler Szymanski (Framingham, MA).
Pasquantonio finished with five goals and seven points, while McCarron totaled four in the win to go with an assist. Colleen Strachan (Bedford, MA) totaled three goals and four points, while Jen Pino (North Andover, MA) scored twice.
The Warriors converted 7-of-12 free-position attempts in the win, while Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD) stopped three shots in the victory.
With one conference game remaining, Merrimack likely will take the fourth seed in the Northeast-10 Tournament, by virtue of winning the tie-breaker with New Haven.
Before the game, the Warriors honored its Class of 2011, Liz Lyons (Westwood, MA), Christina McCarron (Westwood, MA) and Maria DeStefano (Eliot, ME) as part of Senior Day.
"I think our senior class played great today and I'm thankful for their hard work over the last four years," said Baker. "I couldn't be more proud of them."
Merrimack (10-5, 7-4 NE-10) concludes its conference schedule on Tuesday against Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m.
