#6 Field Hockey Stymies Assumption, Rolls to 3-0 Victory

WORCESTER, MA – The #6 Merrimack field hockey team captured its ninth-straight win Wednesday evening, blanking Assumption 3-0 on the road. The Warriors improve to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds sink to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in league action.

Jessica Otis (Pittsford, NY) tallied Merrimack's first goal of the contest 9:25 into play. Otis knocked in a rebound for her fourth score of the campaign, lifting the Warriors to a 1-0 lead.

April Daugherty (Wakefield, RI) potted the visitors' second marker of the game just 2:13 later. Victoria DeLacey (Charlton, MA) bumped a pass from the left wing to Daugherty in front of the cage. The junior co-captain beat the Greyhounds' goalkeeper to register her 10th of the year.

The Warriors enjoyed the 2-0 advantage at halftime. Merrimack outshot Assumption 11-2 through 35 minutes of action.

Jamie Spano (Reading, MA) scored 7:30 into the second stanza to raise the Warriors' lead to 3-0. Spano found the back of the net for the second time this season, finishing a feed from Jen Otis (Penacook, NH) inside the penalty area.

Merrimack concluded the contest with 26 shots, 19 of which being on frame. The Greyhounds managed to attempt six shots on the night.

Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) recorded her sixth shutout of the season while turning aside six shots.

"Our passing patterns and shooting were highlights of our play tonight," said head coach Anne Rounce. "We played well right from the start and two quick goals gave us momentum. Our defense played great again tonight which is key to our success."

The Warriors remain on the road as the schedule turns to October. Merrimack travels to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference battle October 1.
