Women's Basketball Back in Action Tuesday Night as They Take on Adelphi at Home

The Particulars:
The Merrimack women's basketball team returns home for its first game of 2012 as it is set to take on the Adelphi Panthers. Merrimack will be playing in its first home contest since November 22 on Tuesday. The Warriors are coming off of an 74-52 loss at the hands of Dowling before Christmas break. Adelphi enters the contest losing their last game to Eckerd by the score of 68-57.
About Merrimack:
The Warriors are led by Kelly Schatzlein who is averaging a team-high 15.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per contest this year. Schatzlein is coming off of an eight point and seven rebound effort against Dowling in the loss. Genn Roy is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest. Roy is coming off of an six point and three rebound performance before the break in the losing effort against Dowling.The freshman guard duo of Chloe Rothman and Allison Wagner have performed well so far with Rothman averaging 7.5 points and 4.2 assists and Wagner averaging 6.2 points. Jaclyn Lyons is averaging a team-high 7.6 points a game off the bench.
About The Competition:
The Panthers enter Tuesday's contest with a 4-7 overall record after losing their last contest to Eckerd 70-67. Adelphi is led offensively by Jessica Kitrys who is averaging 12.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Sade Jackson is averaging 10.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game so far this season. Kara Tancredi is contributing with 8.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game this season while only starting five games so far. The Panthers are averaging an amazing 10 steals per contest this season as a team as Jackson is averaging more than a steal per contest.
All-Time Series:
The Warriors are 5-4 all-time against Adelphi. Merrimack lost their only matchup with the Panthers last season by the score of 54-45 at Adelphi.
Last game (Merrimack 52 - Dowling 74):
The Merrimack women's basketball team traveled to Dowling on Friday December 16 for a non conference matchup with the Golden Lions. Merrimack was downed by the Golden Lions 74-52. Jaclyn Lyons led the way for the Warriors as she racked up 12 points on 4-7 from the field and 4-4 from the line in the loss. Kelly Schatzlein continued her steady play as she racked up eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Gennifer Roy moved into ninth place on the all-time Merrimack scoring charts in the loss.
1,170 and counting:
Senior guard Gennifer Roy put together a quiet performance against the Golden Lions as she scored six points on only 3-12 from the field. With her performance on Friday against Dowling, Roy moved into 9th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,170 career points. Roy is just 26 points shy of eighth place on the Merrimack womens basketball scoring charts. The senior has led the team in scoring five times this season. Roy is averaging 14.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game this year.
Schatzlein continues to haul in rebounds:
Junior forward Kelly Schatzlein continued her steady play before the break as she hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and added eight points on the offensive side of the ball in the Warriors loss. Schatzlein is third in the conference in rebounds with 10.7 per contest and blocks per contest with 1.9 a game. She is also seventh in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 56.0 percent. Schatzlein is now averaging a double-double with 15.1 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per contest. Schatzlein has racked up a team-high six double-doubles through ten games this year and has led the team in rebounding in all ten games.
Points in the paint & second chance points doom warriors:
One of the biggest problems for the Warriors team all year has been allowing their opponents to et on the offensive glass. This doomed the Warriors on Friday as the Golden Lions grabbed 11 offensive rebounds which turned into 15 second chance points. In all the Warriors were outscored in second chance points 15-4 on the night. Another problem for Merrimack was allowing their opponents too many good looks from inside the paint. The Warriors gave up 36 points in the paint to Dowling and they were only able to record 18 points inside the pain themselves. The Warriors turned the ball over fewer times then their opponents but were still outscored 11-8 in points off turnovers.
Equal scoring across the board not enough:
The Warriors had nine players record atleast two points and six players record six plus points in the loss to Dowling before the break. Jaclyn Lyons led the way forthe Warriors as she recorded a team-high 12 points off the bench as she went 4-7 from the field and 4-4 from the line. Kelly Schatzlein scored eight points and hauled in a team high seven rebounds while Gennifer Roy, Allison Wagner and Chloe Rothman each scored six points.
Merrimack's New Head Coach Monique LeBlanc:
Monique LeBlanc is enterng her first season as head coach of the Merrimack Warriors. LeBlanc brings over seven years of division I coaching experience to North Andover. LeBlanc spent the last three seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northern Arizona University. LeBlanc also served as the teams academic mentor, Northern Arizona had a team GPA of 3.4 in 2010, which ranked 13th among all division I women's basketball programs. LeBlanc also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater Bucknell where her team captured the Patriot league title in 2007 and 2008 and earned a NCAA Tournament Berth in 2008. LeBlanc was a two year captain of the Bisons as a player.
