Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets To Adelphi
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack women's volleyball team was defeated by the Adelphi Panthers in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Bert Hammel Court. With the loss, Merrimack falls to 7-14 overall and 0-8 in NE-10 action.
"We came out strong but we were not able to come up with the big points against a good team," said head coach TJ Hajjar. "We allowed too many big runs at the end of games which ultimately cost us the match."
Game scores against Adelphi: 25-17, 25-20, 25-23.
Merrimack was led offensively by Shaunda Forcier (Gonic, NH) who finished with a team-high 10 kills and four digs while Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, NY) finished with nine kills and six digs in the loss. Senior setter Brianna Trabucco (Canton, Mass.) continued to play well for Merrimack as she finished with a match-high 35 assists and two digs while freshman Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) led the team with seven digs.
The Panthers dominated the opening set as they downed the Warriors by the score of 25-17 in front of the Merrimack crowd. Adelphi went on a 7-0 run early on in the set to put Merrimack down and out right away.
The middle set started off well for Merrimack as they jumped out to the 7-3 lead early on. The Warriors allowed the Panthers to go on two 4-0 runs later in the set and were defeated by the score of 25-20.
In the final set, Merrimack tied the score at 22 as Corrine Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded a big kill. The Warriors however couldn't pick up the set victory as the Panthers finished on a 3-1 run to take the match victory.
The Panthers were led offensively by Chelsea Overholt who finished with a match-high 13 kills and seven digs in the win. Bianca Hernandez finished with a match-high 12 digs and three kills while Katie Bryson finished with 34 assists for the Panthers.
Merrimack (7-14, 0-8 NE-10) will return to the court on Tuesday as they will travel to Bentley for a 7:30 pm start.
