#10 Women's Lacrosse Downed by #2 Adelphi, 20-9

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The #10 Merrimack women's lacrosse team was defeated on Saturday afternoon by the #2 Adelphi Panthers by the score of 20-9. Alicia Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tied a career-high with five goals on the afternoon.

"I was happy to see our depth off the bench today," said head coach Corinne Baker. "We controlled the pace well in the first half but we have to fix some of our 60 minute issues. I am hopeful that we will learn from this game and move forward." 

Tinsley led all players with five goals in the game while leading scorer Colleen Strachan (Bedford, Mass.) was held to one goal and one assist on the afternoon. Liz Greeley (Norwood, Mass.) contributed on the offensive end with one goal and one assist as did Jenn Pino (North Andover, Mass.) and Tyler Szymanski (Farmingham, Mass.).


The Warriors opened up the game with the quick 2-0 advantage as Tinsley found the back of the net twice off assists from Giulia Palombo (Sandwich, Mass.) and Strachan respectively. The Panthers however would respond less than three minutes later to make the score 2-1 as Erica Devito beat goaltender Inna Hedden (Woodbine, MD).

The Panthers would connect on the next six goals to increase their lead to 7-2 before Tinsley ended the run with her third of the game with 5:22 showing on the first half clock. Pino would score less than a minute later off of a free position chance, making the score 7-4 in favor of the Panthers.

Adelphi would score the final two goals of the half to give them the 9-4 halftime advantage. Adelphi held the advantage in shots in the first half 21-10 and were also 9-10 on clear opportunities while the Warriors were 8-12.

Adelphi would open up the second half with a quick strike to make the score 10-4 before Greeley found the back of the net just over two minutes later for the Warriors. Adelphi would go on a 4-0 scoring run over the next two minutes to increase their lead to 14-5.

The Warriors however would respond quickly with three of their own goals scored by Szymanski, Strachan and Tinsley, making the score 14-8 in favor of Adelphi.

The Panthers would outscore the Warriors 6-1 over the final 20 minutes of action with the lone Merrimack goal going to Tinsley for her fifth of the day.

Hedden finished the day with 13 saves for the Warriors while Adelphi goalie Jordann Dempsey recorded six stops on the afternoon. Jennifer Cronin (Norwell, Mass.) had a solid day defensively scooping up four groundballs in the defeat.

For the day, the Warriors were outshot 41-20 and committed 22 turnovers to the Panthers 11. Merrimack went 16-24 on clear attempts while the Panthers went 16-19.

The Warriors (2-1, 2-1 NE-10) will hit the road for their first road contest of the season on Thursday March 22 as they will take on Lock Haven at 4 pm.
