Men's Tennis Secures Shutout Win over Assumption, 9-0
HAVERHILL, MA- The Merrimack men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Assumption Tuesday afternoon at Cedardale Health and Fitness Center. The Warriors improve to 8-5 on the season and remains undefeated in the Northeast-10 with a 4-0 mark. The Greyhounds sink to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in league matches.
Merrimack swept the three doubles matches to hold a 3-0 lead at the start of singles play. At the top spot, Max Eppley (Malaga, Spain) and Sean Pahler (Rumson, NJ) picked up an 8-2 win. Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, MA) and Vince Bellino (Amesbury, MA) prevailed 8-2 at the No. 2 position. Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Chris Toegemann (Narragansett, RI) earned an 8-1 victory at the third slot.
The Warriors snapped a three-match skid with six singles victories to claim the match. Barnhart glided to a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. Eppley triumphed 6-1, 6-2 at the second spot. Golijanin and Toegemann each captured 6-0, 6-0 decisions at the third and sixth slots, respectively.
Bellino posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles match. Pahler logged a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the fifth position to finish the singles sweep.
"Today's match was a great way to resume play in the conference," said head coach Sean Tully. "Our doubles team played extremely well as did everyone in singles action. We'll look to continue our strong play tomorrow."
Merrimack will travel to face Franklin Pierce March 28 in a league match on the road.
