MERRIMACK LOOKS FOR FIRST CONFERENCE VICTORY OF THE SEASON VS. AIC
Game 3 - Merrimack College (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) vs. American International (0-1, 0-0 NE-10)
UPDATE:
Merrimack returns home for their first conference home game of the 2012 season on Saturday as they will take on the American International Yellow Jackets. Merrimack is coming off of an 30-7 victory over division III Rowan while the Yellow Jackets were defeated by Shepherd, 34-7.
SERIES:
Merrimack has a lifetime 5-9 record against American International losing the contest last year to the Yellow Jackets by the score of 38-34. Heading into Saturday the Warriors have lost five straight game to AIC.
STRONG THIRD QUARTER PROPELS WARRIORS TO 30-7 VICTORY:
The Merrimack football team defeated the Rowan Profs on Saturday afternoon by the score 30-7. The Warriors used a 21 point third quarter to secure the victory. Merrimack opened the scoring with a six yard touchdown rush by sophomore Steven Browne in the first quarter and finished off the half with a career-long field goal by Nick Zwann to take the 9-7 lead at half. Merrimack opened the second half with three straight touchdowns as Joe Clancy found Zach Ingalls and Steve Serwon for scores and he also ran for a score of his own from nine yards out. The Merrimack defense held the Profs scoreless in the second half to secure the 30-7 win behind 14 tackles for a loss and an interception.
CLANCY THROWS FOR CAREER-HIGH 325 IN VICTORY OVER ROWAN:
In only his second career start on Saturday at home against Rowan, senior Joe Clancy threw for 325 yards while completing 33 of 48 passes. Clancy connected on two throwing scores along with a rushing score. Clancy finished his career day with a combined 351 yards in the 30-7 victory. All three of Clancy's touchdowns came in the third quarter as he found Zach Ingalls from 25 yards out and Steve Serwon from 31 yards out before rushing one in from nine yards out. Clancy completed a career-high 69 percent of his passes on the afternoon to six different receivers. He led the proficient Merrimack offense to 500 total yards of offense on the afternoon.
VOEGELI LEADS THE COUNTRY IN TOTAL CATCHES:
Senior wide receiver Isaiah Voegeli continued to excel in the Merrimack offense on Saturday against Rowan as he recorded 11 more receptions in the victory. Voegeli now has 25 receptions on the season which ranks him first in the country. Voegeli finished the game against Rowan with 85 yards including a 25 yard catch to open the second half for the Warriors. The preseason All-American leads the Warriors in all receiving categories as he has racked up 25 catches for 213 yards.
DEFENSIVE LINE DOMINATES PROPS ALL AFTERNOON:
The Merrimack defensive line set the tone all afternoon long this past Saturday as they combined for 14 tackles for a loss which accumulated 31 yards. The Warriors also picked up one sack, one interception and seven quarterback hurries for the day. Chris Unis recorded a team-high seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a half sack in the victory. Matt Tripicchio was in the backfield all afternoon long as he finished with four tackles including 3.5 tackles for a loss.
INGALLS FINISHES CAREER DAY WITH 9 GRABS:
Zach Ingalls continued his strong 2012 campaign as he finished the Rowan game with career-highs in catches and yards, grabbing nine passes for 124 yards and one touchdown. Ingalls touchdown came in the third quarter from 25 yards out. Ingalls ranks second on the team with 17 catches, 201 yards and one touchdown for the Warriors.
CLANCY RANKS SECOND IN COUNTRY IN COMPLETIONS:
Senior quarterback Joe Clancy ranks second in the country with 68 completions on the young season. Clancy completed 35 passes in the season opening loss to New Haven and 33 passes in the win on Saturday. The 35 completion effort against the preseason top ranked team in the NE-10, New Haven, was the second most completions in a game in Merrimack football history. James Suozzo completed 36 passes in a game against Southern Connecticut during the 2009 season. Clancy also ranks second in the country with 100 pass attempts, trailing only Bo Cordell of Tusculum who has 124 attempts through two games.
HILL BREAKS THE 100 YARD PLATEAU IN TOTAL YARDS:
Senior running back Jimon Hill had his best game of the young season on Saturday as he carried the ball 21 times for 98 yards and catching four passes for 26 yards. Hill broke the 100 yard plateau for the first time on the young season. Hill averaged 4.7 per carry and had a long of 13 yards against Rowan. On the season Hill ranks second in the conference with 121 yards on 31 carries.
VOEGELI CHASING MERRIMACK SCHOOL RECORDS:
Senior wide receiver Isaiah Voegeli has etched his name in the Merrimack College record books and will look to establish himself as the greatest receiver in program history before he leaves campus. Voegeli currently ranks second in program history with 2,267 receiving yards, 144 yards shy of the record by Chris Laham. Voegeli also ranks in the top five in program history in receptions with 128 and touchdowns with 20. Voegeli ranks fourth in receptions, only 14 catches shy of the record and 16 touchdowns shy of the record.
HOLT HOLDS DOWN OPPONENTS TOP THREAT:
Senior Artis Holt continued his strong play on Saturday, holding the Props leading receiver to just three catches for 25 yards in the victory. Holt also added a team-high seven tackles and an interception to cap off his impressive afternoon. Holt also broke up another would be long play for Rowan in the first half.
FIVE WARRIORS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS:
Entering the 2012 campaign Merrimack received five preseason All-American accolades. Offensively the Warriors had three players represented as Isaiah Voegeli, Jimon Hill and Zach Gilbert were all recognized for their play as juniors. On the defensive side of the ball the Warriors had two players including Michael Wiggins and Artis Holt. Voegeli led the Northeast-10 in receiving yards and touchdowns last season while Hill broke 1,000 total yards. Wiggins led the Warriors defense with 7.5 sacks to go along with 13.5 tackles for a loss, both team highs. Holt was dynamic as a return man along with defensively as he recorded one kickoff return for a touchdown with an average return of 29.6 yards and totaled 33 tackles and two interceptions.
MAJOR HONORS IN 2011:
The Warriors received two major conference awards following the 2011 season as senior Shawn Loiseau was named the NE-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year for the second time. Loiseau broke the 100 tackle plateau for the third straight season and led the conference in tackles. Defensive end Tony Johnson was also named Defensive Lineman of the Year for the second time for his efforts. In all the Warriors received seven All-Conference team members. The All-Conference members were Loiseau, Johnson, Isaiah Voegeli, Jimon Hill, Zach Gilbert, Artis Holt and Michael Wiggins. Voegeli, Johnson and Loiseau were all also represented on the All-Regional team last season.
WARRIORS SCORING STREAK REACHES 116 GAMES:
Merrimack has scored points in 116 consecutive games heading into this weeks matchup with division III Rowan, which ranks them in the top 20 for current point streaks. Valdosta State leads the nation by scoring in 242 consecutive games while conference foe Bentley is the only other Northeast-10 school ranked inside the top 20, scoring in 128 straight. The Warriors have scored 60 or more points two times during this streak and never scored less than three points in a game.

Springfield, Mass. – The Merrimack football team led at half 28-22 but were unable to hold on to the lead in the second half. American International scored with 2:46 remaining in the game to win by the score of 38-34 on Saturday afternoon at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Merrimack gained 446 yards of total offense in the losing effort. The Merrimack offense was led by Senior captain James Suozzo who finished the game 15-for-31 with 136 passing yards, 139 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. Voegeli continued his solid play recording six catches for 74 yards and two receiving touchdowns on the afternoon. Jimon Hill broke the 100 yard plateau for the third time on the season as he ran for 143 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Shawn Loiseau (Shrewsbury, MA) added seven tackles to his all-time school record and giving him 108 for the season. Senior captain Tony Johnson (Lynn, Mass.) recorded a sack, giving him 7.5 on the season, six total tackles and a forced fumble. Ryan McCarthy (Newton, Mass.) led all Merrimack defenders with nine tackles, eight solo and one assisted. Holt racked up five solo tackles and his second interception of the season in the loss. Arduino was 19-31 for 232 yards and three touchdowns, while Fitzgerald ran for 139 yards and two rushing scores. Perryman had eight receptions for 74 yards and two receiving touchdowns in the victory for AIC. Wausa Onigbanjo led the Yellow Jackets defensively with two interceptions and four total tackles.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Behind a season-high 500 yards of total offense the Merrimack football team defeated Rowan University on Saturday by the score of 30-7 in front of 1,220 fans at Martone-Mejail Field in the home opener for the Warriors. Senior quarterback Joe Clancy (Newburyport, Mass.) threw for two second-half touchdowns and ran for another, while completing 33 of 48 passes for 325 yards. Clancy hit Zach Ingalls (Westford, Mass.) from 25-yards out 1:46 into the third, ran one in from nine yards out 4:08 into the third and then connected with tight end Steve Serwon (Amesbury, Mass.) from 32-yards out just under six minutes later. Ingalls finished the game with a career-high nine catches for 124 yards and one touchdown while fellow wide receiver Voegeli closed out his impressive afternoon with 11 grabs for 85 yards. Hill finished the game with a season-high 98 rushing yards on 21 attempts and Quinn McDonough (Medford, Mass.) rushed for 37 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, All-NE-10 performer Artis Holt (Baltimore, Md.) totaled a team-high seven tackles and also intercepted one pass and broke up another in the victory. Sophomore Chris Unis (Gloucester, Mass.) finished with seven tackles including 2.5 tackles for a loss while fellow defensive lineman Matt Tripicchio (Lake Zurich, Ill.) had four tackles including 3.5 for a loss.
