THE WARRIORS OPEN UP NE-10 CONFERENCE PLAY AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS WEDNESDAY NIGHT

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Coming off an 86-77 victory over Mansfield University back on Nov. 9th, the Merrimack College women's basketball team will look to pull off the upset of the season when it travels to No. 7 Stonehill College for a midweek Northeast-10 Conference showdown in Easton, Mass. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

Last Time Out

The Warriors employed a very spread out offensive attack as four players recorded double figures including sophomore Tia Scott (New York, N.Y.) and junior Chloe Rothman (Newton, Mass.) who finished with a team-high 14 points in the victory.

It was an offensive battle between Merrimack and Mansfield tying the game at 6-all with 17:24 left in the first half. Mansfield slowly started to pull away with the lead at 24-19, until a good layup from junior Cassi Amenta (Lynn, Mass.) put the Warriors back on track. Merrimack closed out the half, 47-45, after two made two made free throws from Scott.

Merrimack closed out the second half shooting 42 percent from the floor shooting14-33 from the field. The Mountaineers went 9-23 in the second half of action including 4-7 from three point range.

Katie Fitzpatrick led all Mountaineers with 17 points and five rebounds, while going 4-12 from the field. Megan McSwain finished off her game with 16 points and four rebounds.

Last Season against Stonehill

Game 1:

  • Stonehill defeated Merrimack, 84-67.
  • The Warriors were led offensively by Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, CT) who finished with her fifth double-double of the season as she racked up 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals and two assists.
  • The turning point of the game for Warriors was the first 3:15 of the opening half as the Skyhawks were able to outscore Merrimack 13-0.
  • For the game, Merrimack shot 42.9 percent from the floor and shooting only 60 percent from the charity stripe.

Game 2:

  • Stonehill defeated Merrimack. 67-55.
  • The Skyhawks shot 23-of-51 (45.1) from the floor, compared to 19-of-55 (34.5) for the Warriors. Both sides registered 3-point clips over 40 percent, while Merrimack finished 9-of-12 (75.0) from the free throw line compared to 14-of-18 (77.8) for the home side.
  • Just two Warriors finished in double figures, as Shelby Secor (Antioch, Calif.) led the visitors with 11 points, while Rothman tallied 10 points.
  • Former senior Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, Conn.) led Merrimack with five rebounds and two blocks, while fellow starter Scott chipped in eight points with a 4-of-6 mark from the stripe and totaled a team-high three steals

Game 3: Northeast-10 Quarterfinals

  • Merrimack defeated Stonehill, 77-72, to advance to NE-10 semifinals.
  • Merrimack out-rebounded the Skyhawks by the score of 41-32 for the game and forced 15 Stonehill turnovers in the win.
  • The Skyhawks were led offensively by Asia Ewing who scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds while Tori Faieta scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 boards.
  • The Warriors were led offensively by Rothman who finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds

The Warriors:

  • Rothman and Scott currently lead the team averaging 14.0 points per game, while Scott leads the team with seven assists.
  • Junior Melissa Miller (North Andover, Mass.) ranks first in the Northeast-10 Conference with a 80 percent field goal percentage, while sophomore Lexi Sells (Attleboro, Mass.) also ranks first in the conference shooting 100 percent from long range.
  • As a team, the Warriors average 86.0 points per game and 19.0 assists per game.
  • Since the 2000-01 season, Merrimack has won nine games against the Stonehill, while the Skyhawks have defeated the Warriors 19 times.

Scouting out the Stonehill College Skyhawks:

  • Coming off 93-53 victory over Caldwell College.
  • The Skyhawks are currently ranked seventh in the USA Today Sports Division II Preseason Poll.
  • Stonehill returns all five starters and 11 letterwinners from its 2012-13 squad..
  • As a team, the Skyhawks average 87 points per game, while hauling down 41.0 rebounds per game.
