BOSTON – Two new school records were set by an individual and a relay team, as the Merrimack men's and women's track & field team wrapped up action on Saturday at the New England Championships held Feb. 22-23 at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.
Graduate student Ethan Weaver (Brooklyn, Conn.) established a new top mark in the 400m dash, while the women's 4x400 relay team shattered the previous school record in that respective event, highlighting a solid afternoon of competition for the Warriors against all Division I, II and III teams throughout New England.
That field included not only some of the top competition from the region, but the entire country, as Merrimack ran against the ranks of top programs such as Connecticut, the University of Rhode Island, Providence, BU and Northeastern. Merrimack also competed against several other NE-10 rivals, as well.
Weaver was a bright spots for the men, establishing a new school record in the 400m dash. The graduate student sprinter posted a time of 50.23 seconds in the event, good for a 26th-place finish overall.
In the women's 4 x 400m relay, the quartet of sophomore Noelia Figuereo (Haverhill, Mass.), junior Briana Devereaux (Londonderry, N.H.), freshman Bethany Labossier (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Christine Manfra (Stoneham, Mass.) combined to shatter the old school record by 11 seconds, surpassing the four-minute mark for a final time of 3:59.05.
In the 60m dash, Figuereo earned a 12th-place finish in the semifinals of the event. The first-year sophomore made it past the preliminaries with a time of 7.83 before settling for 12th in the semifinals with an identical time.
For the men, freshman Denzel Livingston (Billerica, Mass.) qualified for the semifinals in the 60m as well before finishing in 11th with a time of 7.14 seconds.
The Warriors have concluded the indoor portion of their schedule and will now enjoy an extended break until hitting the course for the outdoor season. Merrimack will return to action at the Bridgewater State Invitational on March 23.
