Men's Tennis Drops Spring Opener To NYIT, 6-3
PORT WASHINGTON, NY – The Merrimack men's tennis team opened up their spring season with a 6-3 loss at the hands of the NYIT Bears. The Warriors won two singles matches and one doubles match on the afternoon.
In singles play, the Warriors were led by Matt Pronesti (Mission Viejo, Calif.) who won his match over Filip Van Eylen by the score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Matt Lipinski (Arlington, Mass.) was the only other Warrior to win his singles match as he won in three sets by the score of 7-6 (5-7), 6-4.
In doubles action, Lipinski and Pronesti were the lone Warriors to pick up a victory as they defeated Mirccea Dimofte and Thomas Lieb by the score of 9-7. The two other doubles matches went to two sets as Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) put in a good effort but were downed 7-8 (5-7). The duo of Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) were downed in their doubles match up by the same score of 7-8 (5-7).
Merrimack will return to action on Friday, March 8 as they will travel to Boston to take on the Boston University Terriers in a non conference match at 3 p.m.
