Relay Team Helps Men's Track Finish Sixth at Stonehill Invitational

EASTON, Mass. – Guided by a record-setting performance by the 4x800m relay team, the Merrimack men's track & field team posted a sixth-place finish at the Stonehill Invitational on Friday on the campus of Stonehill College.
Competing in a field of nine teams, including Division I foes Boston University, Boston College and Bryant University, the Warriors mustered 48 team points to place sixth in the field, besting NE-10 foes American International and Franklin Pierce, as well.
The pinnacle of the afternoon came with the 4x800m relay team's performance. The quartet of sophomore Sherif Ali (Cliffside Park, N.J.) and Luis Cruz (Lawrence, Mass.) and freshmen Daniel O'Flynn (Ipswich, Mass.) and Nick Christensen (Peabody, Mass.) combined to post a time of 7:53.21, setting a new school record while earning a second-place finish and a qualification in the New England Championships in the process.
Other highlights for the Warriors came in the form of graduate student sprinters Ethan Weaver (Brooklyn, Conn.) and Ian Weaver (Brooklyn, Conn.). The latter placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 22.91 seconds, while the former edged his twin brother for a third-place performance in the 400m dash, finishing in 49.72 seconds.
Moving to distance, freshman Aaron Maurais (Hopedale, Mass.) impressed in the 3000m Steeplechase with a third-place finish (10:14.96) while junior Anthony Baccini Billerica, Mass.) placed fourth in the long jump with a final distance of 6.26m.
The Warriors will now turn their sights toward the Northeast-10 Championships, which will be held next Friday and Saturday (May 3-4).
