NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Katrina Squeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) tied a career high with two goals, and the fifth-ranked Merrimack College field hockey team ripped off five unanswered goals after giving up the game's first en route to a 5-1 victory against Saint Anselm College on Tuesday night at Martone-Mejail Field.

The Basics
Score: Merrimack 5,
Saint Anselm 1
Records: Merrimack 2-1
| Saint Anselm 1-1
Location:
Martone-Mejail Field| North Andover, Mass.

How It Happened
After giving up the game's first goal just 2:24 in to regulation, the Warriors responded with their most impressive offensive display of the season, scoring the last two goals of the first half before building their lead to 5-1 with a five-minute, three-goal span early in the second half to put away the Hawks.

Elizabeth Sears – who has scored all three of Saint Anselm's goals through two games this season – continued her torrid pace with a marker for the visitors less than three minutes in, but it was all Merrimack from there on out. Sophomore Sydney Bowker (Schenectady, N.Y.) got the Warriors on the board in the 13th minute before Squeri closed out the half with her first of the game.

Five minutes into the second, it was Squeri again knocking in a deflected pass to make it a two-goal lead, and senior Candace Waldie (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Eva Colarusso (Arlington, Mass.) rounded out the offense with two more tallies less than three minutes apart.

From there on out, junior Gina Rosinski (Derry, N.H.) used a seven-save performance to pick up her first win of the year, while Shauna Whittemore turned in a 15-save effort for the Hawks but took the loss.

What They Said
Head Coach Anne Rounce
: "We had a solid night defensively, and we found ways to score when we needed to, and it was obviously great to get a win in our home opener on our own turf. The only downside was our slow start in the first, but we responded well afterward and turned in an overall solid effort against a tough team."

A Closer Look

  • Squeri tied a career high with four points on both markers, her second and third goals of the season
  • Merrimack dominated the shot chart with a 30-12 advantage in attempts and put 20 on target, with the Hawks generating only eight shots on net
  • Senior Jessica Otis (Pittsford, N.Y.) enjoyed a stellar game despite her absence in the scoring column; the Pittsford, N.Y., native led the way with nine attempts and six shots on goal for the hosts
  • Freshman Nicole Bradley (Essex, Mass.) assisted on Merrimack's first two goals of the game, while classmate Maura Doyle (Merrimac, Mass.) added a helper on the third Warrior goal. They, alongside Colarusso, each recorded their first career points in a Merrimack uniform
  • The Warriors held a 15-4 edge in penalty corners on the night
