NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – With hopes of snapping its two-game losing streak and returning to .500 on the year, the Merrimack College Field Hockey team travels west to battle Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption on Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass. First whistle is set for 12 p.m.
The Basics
Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 | 12 p.m.
Records: Merrimack (2-3) | Assumption (3-3)
Location: Multi-Sport Stadium| Worcester, Mass.
Last Time Out
Freshmen forwards Maura Doyle (Merrimac, Mass.) and Nicole Bradley (Essex, Mass.) connected for the game's first goal just five minutes into regulation, but Stonehill's Erika Kelly responded with a hat trick of her own to will the fourth-ranked Skyhawks to a 3-1 victory over Merrimack on Tuesday night at Martone-Mejail Field.
The Warriors took an early lead at the five-minute mark of the contest, but from there on out it was all Kelly, who ran up her league-leading goal total to 10 in three games after her heroics on Tuesday night. Both sides entered the intermission tied at a goal apiece, but Kelly struck for her second marker in the 49th minute before adding an insurance strike with nine minutes to go.
That was all Elizabeth Genovese would need, turning aside nine shots on target to pick up the win for the visitors. Merrimack out-shot Stonehill by a 19-12 margin on the night but for the second straight game, the Warriors' offensive unit would be limited to just a single tally.
Last Season vs. Assumption
Last season, Assumption came to town with Merrimack riding a seven-game winning streak, and the Greyhounds put a stop to that run with a 2-1 decision over the Warriors back on Sept. 26, 2012.
Assumption built a 2-0 lead through the early portion of the second half before then-senior April Daughtery got Merrimack on the board with less than 20 minutes to play. That was the closest the Warriors would get, as Lauren Neilan recorded seven saves to stun Merrimack last season.
The Warriors:
- Have registered just a 20.0 percent shooting percentage on the season despite averaging 17 shot attempts per game
- Have lost back-to-back regular season games for the first time since the 2010 campaign
- Rank tied for fifth in goals per game (2.5) but 10th in save percentage (58%)
The Greyhounds:
- Have started the year an even 3-3 but are coming off a 3-0 loss at Bentley on Tuesday night
- Own victories over Seton Hill (3-2 OT) and Franklin Pierce (6-1) and have lost at Slippery Rock (3-1) and Adelphi (2-1)
- Kiley Colucci ranks atop the league with five assists on the season. In total, she has tallied 13 points (4g, 5a)
- Senior Heather Philbrick has logged the most action in net, starting five games with a 1.55 GAA and .765 SV% and has gone 3-2 in that span with one shutout recorded
