NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Back on its home turf for the first time in 11 days, the Merrimack College field hockey team will play host to Adelphi University Saturday night for both teams' Northeast-10 Conference opener at Martone-Mejail Field. First whistle is set for 6 p.m.
The Basics
Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 | 6 p.m.
Records: Merrimack (4-3, 0-0 NE-10) | Adelphi (4-3, 0-0 NE-10)
Location: Martone-Mejail Field | North Andover, Mass.
Last Time Out
Senior forward Jessica Otis (Pittsford, N.Y.) registered a career-high five-point afternoon while sophomore Madison Davis (San Jose, Calif.) posted her first collegiate clean sheet thanks to a three-save effort, as Merrimack cruised to a 4-0 road victory against Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy Field.
After scoring just once in the first half thanks to rookie Maura Doyle (Merrimac, Mass.)'s second career tally just 1:25 into the contest, the Warriors put the game out of reach with three goals in the second frame, while Davis went relatively unchallenged, facing three shots on target while the defense in front of her stood tall against the Purple Knights.
Merrimack held a 14-8 edge in shots on target, and Merrimack's dominance was made more impressive by the fact that Saint Michael's held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners on the afternoon.
Earlier This Season vs. Adelphi
Junior goalkeeper Gina Rosinski (Derry, N.H.) matched her season-high with a seven-save performance, but host Adelphi used a three-goal output in the second half to claim a 5-1 victory over the then-fifth-ranked Warriors back on Sept. 14.
With the game tied at 1-1 less than 10 minutes into the contest, Adelphi's Molly Cuevas tallied the game-winner at 10:02 of the first half. Merrimack's high-octane offense, which averaged just over three goals per game entering the day, was relatively quiet against the Panthers, mustering only four shots on goal against Adelphi goalkeeper Kelly Serrao, who turned aside three shots in a winning effort.
Senior Candace Waldie (North Andover, Mass.) notched her third goal of the season to account for the only offensive output of the game for the Warriors, while host Adelphi built on a 2-1 lead in the second half, scoring twice in the opening five minutes to build a 4-2 lead before Lena Pollich added a late insurance tally in the 54th minute to settle for the final margin of victory.
The Warriors:
- Are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the season (2) and will look to extend that Saturday
- Have outscored the opposition, 9-1, over that two-game winning streak after being outscored 8-2 during their two-game losing streak
- Rank third in scoring offense (3.1 gpg), sixth in scoring defense (2.26 GAA) and ninth in save percentage (70%)
- Waldie (16), Otis (12) and sophomore Katrina Squeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) all represent double-digit scorers, with Waldie's seven goals good for the team lead
The Panthers:
- Have gone 2-2 in their last four but most recently fell to AIC, 2-0
- Enter 4-3 overall on the season, with Saturday's contest against Merrimack representing their NE-10 opener as well
- Rank eighth in scoring offense (2.0 gpg), seventh in scoring defense (2.41 GAA) and eighth in save percentage (72%)
