Women's Tennis Wins Match vs. Assumption, 6-3
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's tennis team defeated Assumption College, 6-3, at North Andover High School Thursday afternoon.

Head Coach Aaron Bergeron: "I'm very happy with the grit our women showed today. Assumption is a tough, tough team and we needed to be able to find that extra gear. The girls showed me that they had that gear today and I'm looking forward to seeing them play with some added confidence. Danielle Dunn played her best match of the season so far and I'm glad she was the one to clinch it for us.
How It Happened
After dropping their last match to Adelphi University, the Warriors were looking to get back into the win column in Northeast-10 play against Assumption.
The doubles matches set the tone of the day in favor of the Navy and Gold, as Merrimack led 2-1 after three matches.
Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Chealsey Giatrelis (Centerville, Mass.) won 8-2 at No. 1. Then at No. 2, senior Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and freshman Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) defeated their opponent 8-5.
In singles play, it was more of the same. Grace Messina maintained an undefeated record at No. 1, beating Aida Vila 6-1, 6-1. Her sister, Shakee Messina, won at No. 2 in a hard-fought, three-set match. She dropped the first game 6-2, but bounced back to take the next two games 6-4 and 6-1.
Fellow senior Giatrelis make quick work of No. 3, winning 6-2 and 6-1. Dunn was matched up with Marie Black at No. 4 and put forth a strong effort. She won 6-3, 6-2 and garnered high praise from her coach.
Senior Rachel Muller (North Andover, Mass.) dropped a back-and-forth match at No. 5, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-7. Freshman Mackenzie Blair (Thomaston, Conn.) lost at No. 6, 6-3 and 6-4.
