Women's Volleyball Extends Winning Streak with 3-1 Defeat of American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team defeated American International, 3-1, in a road match played earlier today.

How It Happened
Playing in their second match in as many days, the Warriors handed the Yellow Jackets a four-set loss to jump back over .500 in conference play.

The Navy and Gold took the first two sets by scores of 25-7 and 25-18. AIC fought back to take the third set, but the Warriors won the final frame convincingly, 25-7, to win the match.

Seniors Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Aliya Rakhmetova (Arlington, Va.) tied for the team lead with 10 kills apiece. For Rakhmetova, she tied her season-high with 10 kills, reaching double-digits for the second time this season.

Fellow fourth-year player Corrine Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass.) posted a well-rounded effort, notching six kills, six digs and four block assists.

Merrimack is now on its second longest winning streak of the season. The Warriors ripped off seven wins a row over the final three weeks of September.

Inside The Numbers

  • Sheehan finished with her 11th double-double of the year, after totaling 15 digs to go along with her 10 kills
  • Sophomore setter Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) dished out a match-high 40 assists, while junior libero Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) compiled 18 digs to lead all players
  • Senior Katie Wilcox (Pembroke, Mass.) appeared in only her fourth match of the season, totaling a season-high four kills
