Women's Basketball Hosts NE-10/CACC Challenge to Begin 2014-15 Season

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. –The Merrimack College women's basketball team opens up the 2014-15 campaign by hosting the NE-10/CACC Challenge, taking on Post University tonight at 5 p.m. and then Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Last Time Out:
The Warriors enter the 2014-15 season with high expectations, as a roster filled with eight upperclassmen hope that experience leads to success in the new season.

Merrimack finished the 2013 season with a 12-15 overall record, advancing to the First Round of the ECAC Tournament. Senior captain Allison Wagner (Center Conway, N.H.) and junior captain Ashley Weissmann (Highland, Calif.) have emerged as leaders for the Warriors. Last season's leading scorer, Chloe Rothman (Newton, Mass.), returns for her senior season and has her eyes set on her most successful year to date.

The Eagles:

  • Last season, Post University finished at 10-16 (9-10 CACC) and enters the 2014-15 year picked to finish fourth in the North Division of the CACC.
  • The Eagles lost their top-three scorers from last season, but sophomore Liz Falcigno will look to increase on a 10.5 scoring average from last year
  • Point guard Jacquelynne Pugh returns for her senior season. Last year she led the team with nearly four assists per game

The Lightning:

  • Goldey-Beacom knocked the Warriors out of the ECAC Tournament last season, as the Lightning finished as the runner-up in that tournament. They finished the season with a 15-15 record, setting a program record by playing 30 games in a season
  • The Lighting were picked to finish fourth in the south division of the CACC. Senior guard Lillian Chukwueze returns after leading the team in scoring last year (16.0 ppg)
  • The Lightning boast a young roster with seven underclassmen and six freshmen

Merrimack will begin Northeast-10 play on Wednesday at 5:30 when they take on Stonehill College at Hammel Court. Single-game tickets will be available for purchase online at this link, or by calling the Merrimack Athletics Box Office at 978-837-5324.
