WARRIORS SUFFER 3-2 LOSS TO MOLLOY BEFORE DEFEATING CALDWELL, 10-2

CARY, N.C. - The Merrimack College baseball team split a two-game doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the USA Baseball Training Complex, as the Warriors fell to Molloy, 3-2, before defeating Caldwell, 10-2.

How it Happened: Game 1 vs. Molloy

Freshman Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass.) tallied two hits and two RBIs to lead Merrimack's offense while senior Eddie Newton (North Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Sean O'Neill (Norwood, Mass.) chipped in with a hit and a run each. Sophomore Frank Crinella (Springfield, Mass.) and junior John Pastyrnak (Bristol, Conn.) each tallied a hit in the loss.

On the mound, junior Joe Carnevale (East Providence, R.I.) tossed six innings and scattered two hits while striking out four batters. Senior Travis Terrill (Hudson, N.H.) pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed a hit and a run, while senior Tyler Cuming (Red Bank, N.J.) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing two hits and two runs.

Merrimack recorded the first run of the game in the seventh inning on a RBI single to left field by DiSarcina which allowed Newton to score. With the Warriors up 1-0, the Lions scored three unearned runs to take a 3-1 lead over Merrimack heading into the ninth inning.

Merrimack could only respond back with an unearned run by O'Neill, off a single to right field by DiSarcina, to take the 3-2 loss in Game 1 of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.

A Closer Look

  • Merrimack held a 6-5 edge in hits, while Merrimack tallied three walks and seven strikeouts.
  • Five different Molloy players recorded a hit while Kevin Podell, John Galanoudis and Brian Murphy each scored a run.
  • Molloy finished the afternoon with five strikeouts, three RBI and an error.

How it Happened: Game 2 vs. Caldwell

Junior Dionys Quezada (Lawrence, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 at the plate while recording a double and a RBI. Behind him, Crinella went 2-for-3 and chipped in with three runs for the Warriors. Freshman Ryan Petrone (Cherry Valley, Mass.) also had a big day for Merrimack, going 3-for-6 at the plate.

For the second time this season, senior Conner McMahon (Westfield, Mass.) picked up the win for the Warriors. He scattered four hits, two runs, four walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Junior Matt Solar (Sterling, Mass.) pitched two innings of relief, while sophomore Mike Nolan (Pembroke, Mass.) came in the ninth inning to pitch for Merrimack.

Caldwell picked up the early tally in the first to take a 1-0 lead over the Warriors. However, the Warriors responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to lead 6-1. 

The Cougars scored a run in the top of the third, after an error by senior catcher CJ Flannery (Hudson, Mass.). After two scoreless innings, the Navy and Gold extended its lead to eight (10-2) after four runs in the sixth.

A Closer Look 

  • Merrimack finished game two with nine stolen bases, eight RBI and 12 hits.
  • Caldwell was held to only five hits and one RBI.
  • Senior outfielder Andrew Nunez had two of Caldwell's six hits in the loss.
  • This is the second time this season Merrimack defeated Caldwell.

"It was a total team effort in Game 2, as many players helped us win and Connor McMahon stood out with his performance on the mound," said head coach Jim Martin.

Merrimack returns to action, tomorrow (March 16), when they take on Felician College in Day 2 of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at USA Baseball Training Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
