Women's Tennis Too Much for SNHU, Defeats Penmen in Regular Season Finale, 7-2

WARRIORS END THE REGULAR SEASON WITH AN UNDEFEATED RECORD IN NORTHEAST-10 PLAY

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Merrimack College women's tennis team finished up its 2013-14 season with a 7-2 road victory over Southern New Hampshire on Thursday afternoon at the SNHU Tennis Courts.

With the win, Merrimack finished the season with an impressive 13-4 overall record and an unbeaten record of 12-0 in Northeast-10 play. The Warriors earned the No. 1 seed for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and will have a first-round bye.

How it Happened

Merrimack claimed a pair of victories in doubles action to start singles play with a 2-1 lead.

The Warriors' top pair Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) prevailed, 8-6, in No. 1 doubles. Kara Hole (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Chealsey Giatrelis earned an 8-3 victory in No. 2 doubles. Rachel Muller (North Andover, Mass.) and Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, N.H.) were defeated in No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-6.

The Warriors took five of the six singles matches to seal the 7-2 road victory against the Penmen.

In No. 1 singles, G. Messina earned the 6-1, 6-4 victory against Diana Vamvakitis while Giatrelis defeated Sarah Schollgen in No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-0 (10-4). S. Messina prevailed in No. 3 doubles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Jamie Hann.

SNHU picked up their second point of the game as Yolando Green defeated Muller in No. 5 singles, 9-8 (10-8). In the final match of the day, Barnes added an 8-0 win at No. 6 singles.
