WARRIORS SUFFER 7-3 LOSS AGAINST FALCONS AND CONTINUE NE-10 ACTION TOMORROW AGAINST ASSUMPTION

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team endured a 7-3 loss to Northeast Divisional foe Bentley University Wednesday afternoon at Robert DeFelice Baseball Field.

How it Happened

Sophomore Matt Brown (Belmont, Mass.) opened the scoring with a RBI single to left field in the first inning to score sophomore Frank Crinella (Springfield, Mass.) and give Merrimack a 1-0 edge.

In the third inning, the Falcons' offense erupted four runs on five hits and grabbed a 4-1 lead. Bentley was able to start off the inning with a single before scoring its first two runs off a Falcons' triple. With two outs, Bentley was able to tack on another run off a RBI single to take a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth.

Down by three, Merrimack responded with a run in the sixth to slice the deficit to two (4-2). With one out and runners on first and third, Brown tallied his second RBI of the game, as the sophomore singled up the middle to score Crinella.

The Falcons added three runs in the home half of the seventh inning to push the gap to five (7-2).

In the ninth, Brown led off the inning with a single before a double from sophomore Bobby Losanno (Peabody, Mass.) put runners on second and third. With one out, junior John Pastyrnak (Bristol, Conn.) allowed a runner to score off a RBI ground out. From that point on, Bentley's bullpen kept the Warriors at bay and secured the 7-3 win.  

A Closer Look

  • Junior Tim Cashman (Rowley, Mass.) earned his first loss of the season, as the righty scattered six runs on seven hits as well as striking out four players during six innings of work.
  • Merrrimack finished 10-of-33 at the plate, while Brown led the Warriors with four hits.
  • Bentley held a 7-3 edge in RBI while Padovani recorded a team-high three RBI.
  • The Warriors' bullpen recorded four walks and six strikeouts.
  • Losanno tallied two hits while four different Merrimack players registered a hit.
  • Bentley's pitcher allowed three runs, 10 hits, three strike outs and a walk over a complete game.

"Credit Bentley for taking advantage of opportunities in key situations," said head coach Jim Martin. "We will look to bounce back tomorrow against Assumption."

Merrimack returns to action on Thursday, April 3, when the team hosts Assumption College in the Warriors' home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Warrior Baseball Diamond.
