Women's Crew Claims Second Straight Northeast-10 Rowing Cup Saturday

WORCESTER, Mass. – Thanks to a gutsy effort by a shorthanded Varsity 8 boat, the Merrimack College women's crew team battled valiantly to claim the team's second straight Northeast-10 Conference Cup on a rainy Saturday morning on the Quinsigamond River.

The Basics
Event: 2014 NE-10 Championship
Team Standings: Merrimack 1st
| Assumption 2nd | Franklin Pierce 3rd
Location:
Lake Quinsigamond | Worcester, Mass.

What They Said
Head Coach David LeFebvre: "We had a very tough week of practice where we did a lot of hard work. Things were progressing nicely, until Thursday when Kaylee McKenna had to sit out with injury necessitating a different and unfamiliar lineup. Losing our only senior, who is also Captain and one of our most experienced  rowers should have held us back, but the ladies rose to the occasion and raced above themselves to win comfortably."

How It Happened
In the second annual installment to determine an unofficial Northeast-10 Conference Cup champion between the three schools that sponsor women's crew, the Warriors battled rainy but otherwise ideal conditions to claim an extremely slim margin of victory for the conference crown.

Merrimack's Varsity 8 defeated Assumption College and Franklin Pierce by a combined final time of 7:32, just one second faster than Assumption. The win gave the Warriors the unofficial title of the New England Division II women's crew Champion.

Merrimack College Varsity 8 Lineup:
Coxswain: Jenn Leandro
Stroke: Aubrey O'Neill
7: Lydia Staschke
6: Lauren Blazon
5: Megan Lacombe
4: Jessie Eichel
3: Mara Payne
2:  Norina Reda
Bow: Kristen Uhler

Results:
1) Merrimack College 7:32
2) Assumption College 7:33
3) Franklin Pierce 7:59

Up Next
The Warriors will take their talents back to Lake Quinsigamond next Saturday to compete in the New England Rowing Championships against some of the best Division I, II and III schools in the region.
