Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From Saint Michael's, 12-1 and 7-0

WARRIORS REGISTER FOURTH SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN NIGHTCAP AGAINST PURPLE KNIGHTS

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Bobby Losanno (Peabody, Mass.) went 5-of-8 with two runs and three RBIs over two games, while junior Joe Carnevale (East Providence, R.I) tallied his first shutout of the season on Sunday, as the Merrimack College baseball team swept Saint Michael's College in a Northeast Division doubleheader, 12-1 and 7-0, at Doc Jacobs Field.

How It Happened: Game 1

Led by a high powered offense, Merrimack jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead after two innings against the Purple Knights' pitching staff. The Warriors posted three runs in the first and three more runs in the top of the second to gain the early lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Merrimack tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth after two RBI's from sophomore Sean O'Neill (Norwood, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Petrone (Cherry Valley, Mass.). Up by eight, the Warriors extended their lead to nine in the top of the fifth as sophomore Frank Crinella (Springfield, Mass.) connected for his second RBI of the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Saint Michael's recorded its first run of the game off an unearned run by Buteau. Ahead by a 9-1 margin heading into the final inning, Merrimack tacked on three more insurance runs to secure the 12-1 victory over the Purple Knights in game one.

How It Happened: Game 2

The Navy and Gold continued to dominate at the plate as the Navy and Gold took an early 3-0 lead after three innings. Petrone and Losanno tallied the Warriors' first three run of the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Michael's threatened the visitors' with bases loaded, but Carnevale ended the threat with two straight outs.

Merrimack registered two runs off two hits to extend its lead to five in in the top of the sixth. Following the run, Merrimack rallied for a run in the seventh and eighth inning to take a 7-0 lead over the Purple Knights. Up by seven, the Warriors kept Saint Michael's at bay in the ninth to record the Warriors' fourth shutout of the season, 7-0.

Inside the Numbers

  • In game one, freshman Joe Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) tallied his first win of the season for the Warriors after allowing four hits, four walks, no runs and tallied three strikeouts. 
  • Five different Merrimack players recorded at least two hits in the 12-1 win over the Purple Knights while Losanno led the Warriors in game two with a 3-of-4 showing at the plate.
  • Carnevale allowed five hits, one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings.
  • Merrimack finished the afternoon with a 26-of-74 (.351) effort at the plate while Saint Michael's went 12-of-68 (.176).
  • The Warriors held a 19-1 advantage in RBI and a 19-1 advantage in runs against the Purple Knights.

Merrimack baseball returns to the Warrior Baseball Diamond on Tuesday, April 29, when they host the Greyhounds of Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
