WARRIORS SUFFER 12TH LOSS OF THE SEASON TUESDAY EVENING AGAINST YELLOW JACKETS

NORTH ADOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team suffered its 12th loss of the season, as the Warriors were defeated, 7-2, by Southwest Division foe American International Tuesday evening in Springfield, Mass.

How it Happened

Freshman Ryan Petrone (Cherry Valley, Mass.) and freshman Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass.) paced Merrimack offensively with two hits each. Sophomore Matt Brown (Belmont, Mass.), junior John Pastyrnak (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Pat Florence (Lowell, Mass.) also collected base knocks in the game for the Warriors.

The Warriors plated the first two runs of the afternoon in the top of the first inning. With one out and runners on second and third, Brown connected for an RBI single to allow a sophomore Mike Forgione (North Branford, Conn.) to score. Following a strikeout, Petrone tallied the Warriors' second run of the game after an RBI single to left center .

In the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets erupted for three runs on five hits to grab a 3-2 lead over the Warriors. American International doubled its lead to 4-2 in the second to claim a 4-2 edge.

After three scoreless innings, Eddie Ritch drove in the hosts' lone run of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field after Justin Carey singled to shortstop. Down by five, Merrimack threatened the Yellow Jackets in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third but, a ground out to shortstop ended the Warriors' threat.
American International tacked on two runs in the seventh to move ahead 7-2. In the final inning, Merrimack threatened the hosts again with runners on first and second but the Yellow Jackets ended the game with back-to-back outs.

Freshman Joe Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) tossed five innings in his third start of the 2014 campaign and scattered four runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. Freshman Matt Dinello (Southington, Conn.) hurled the final three innings and racked up two strikeouts while allowing three runs on three hits.

  • Merrimack went 7-of-33 at the plate while the hosts went 10-of-34.
  • American International's Michael Gentile picked up his second win of the season as he allowed two runs on two hits while striking out four.
  • The Warriors tallied seven walks, six strikeouts and left 12 runners on base.
  • The Yellow Jackets tallied seven RBI while Dan Asselin and Tyler Geffert tallied a team-high two RBI.

What They Said

"We need to come out and play better in all phases," said head coach Jim Martin. "We need to be more consistent with our approaches especially when we play Bentley tomorrow."

Merrimack returns to action tomorrow (Apr. 9), as the Warriors travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference clash. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
