Women's Volleyball Heads South for the Wildcat Regional Invitational

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team travels to Wilmington, Del. this weekend to participate in the Wildcat Regional Invitational. The Warriors will play Holy Family and Dowling on Friday, and then take on Wilmington and Millersville on Saturday.

Last Time Out:
The Warriors captured their first win of the season last Saturday with a 3-1 victory over St. Michael's College. After splitting the first two sets, Merrimack grabbed control of the match winning the final two sets by same score of 25-21.

En route to her selection as NE-10 Player of the Week, senior Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) collected her second consecutive double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 17 digs. 

Sophomore Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Fellow sophomore Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) paced the team with 41 assists.

Last Season vs. Dowling
The Navy and Gold lost to Dowling 3-0 last year. The three sets were highly contested, with the Lions winning 25-22, 25-23 and 26-24.

Sheehan recorded a match-high 16 kills on 42 total attacks, Stuhr led all players with 39 assists, and Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) finished with a match-high 19 digs.

Merrimack did not play Holy Family, Wilmington or Millersville last season.

The Warriors:

  • Sheehan leads the NE-10 in kills per set with 4.11 and Stuhr leads the conference with 10.44 assists per set.
  • This tournament represents the first matches away from Hammel Court for Merrimack. Last season the Warriors went 6-7 on the road.

The Tigers:

  • Holy Family is 1-4 on the season and has lost four straight games following a season-opening victory over Virginia Union University.
  • In their last match, the Tigers fell to CACC foe Philadelphia University in five sets.

The Lions:

  • Of the seven teams in the tournament, the Lions boast the best record at 5-0.
  • Dowling offers a well-balanced attack, with four players recording at least 40 kills. Jessica Kalbfleisch leads the team with 59 kills.

The Wildcats:

  • Wilmington is 2-3 entering the weekend, but has won two of their last three matches
  • The Wildcats feature an offense with two setters as Kasey Couch and Alex Siolos have both recorded over 80 assists through five matches.

The Marauders:

  • Millersville is also undefeated (4-0) entering tournament play.
  • The Marauders attack well as a team, committing only 50 errors so far this season and compiling a .295 attacking percentage.

Up Next
The Warriors will have one week off before they return to the court, playing Georgian Court up in Manchester on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m.
