What They Said
Head coach Tony Martone: "It was a disappointing result, but all the credit goes to Southern Connecticut. There's a reason why they are ranked in the top-10 in the country. I liked the effort from the guys and they competed hard. We just weren't able to create enough tonight."
How It Happened
The Warriors hung in with the No. 7 Owls, but eventually SCSU pulled away.
In the 11th minute Southern Connecticut opened up the scoring, capitalizing on a corner kick. Markus Jacobsen headed in the crossed-in ball to make the score 1-0 Owls.
Senior goalkeeper Jose Silva (Northborough, Mass.) played well, totaling four first-half saves to keep the Warriors within striking distance. Merrimack notched four shots in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half things got away from the Navy and Gold. Jose Silva picked up a red card in the 76th minute, resulting in his ejection from the game. Senior Andrew Suttle (Northbrook, Ill.) replaced Jose Silva, making his first appearance of the season.
The Owls would score twice on Suttle in the final three minutes to cap off the victory.
With the loss, Merrimack's unbeaten streak to begin the season halts at six games.
