NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's tennis team defeated the College of Saint Rose 8-1 earlier today. Recently announced head coach Aaron Bergeron won his first match at the helm of the Warriors

Bergeron: "I'm very happy to start the season off with a win, and I was very impressed with how our freshmen competed and handled the pressure of playing collegiate tennis. We still have a lot to improve on, but overall I thought everyone looked pretty good out there."
How It Happened
The Warriors made a strong showing in their 2014 season opener, taking a step in the right direction towards back-to-back Northeast-10 Championships.
Merrimack started out strong winning the doubles matches 3-0. The combination of senior Chealsey Giatrelis (Centerville, Mass.) and freshman Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) won the first decision. Senior Rachel Muller (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Mackenzie Blair (Thomaston, Conn.) then won their matchup and the Warriors took the third on default.
Reigning NE-10 Player and Rookie of the Year Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) opened up singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Her sister and captain Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) stepped up next, winning 6-0, 6-1 to give Merrimack the 5-0 lead and the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Blair and Dunn won decisions at No. 3 and No. 4 in their collegiate singles debut.
- Freshman Abbey Bryant (North Brookfield, Mass.) rounded out the newcomers for the Blue and Navy, making her first appearance in the No. 5 spot.
